The kingdom of Daventry is ruled by King Edward the Benevolent and his wife. Unfortunately, the king and queen remained childless. A sorcerer approached them and told them that he could ensure the queen to become pregnant if the king and queen would gift him their magic mirror that allows them to see into the future. They did, and the sorcerer placed the mirror under the guard of a nasty fire-breathing dragon, but failed to live up to his end of the bargain.

Seeing the mirror was a major help predicting the perfect harvest times, Daventry's food production started failing, and the country was ruined by famine and the plague that followed. The queen fell ill. A dwarf arrived, offering a root that would cure the queen. But in exchange he asked for the Magic Shield that made Edward invincible. Not willing to let his wife die, Edward quickly agreed. Alas, the root was not able to fully restore the queen's health, and she passed shortly after.

For years the king grieved, until he rescued a beautiful woman from a pack of wolves. They fell in love, and were about to get married. On the evening before the wedding, though, the princess, who really was a witch in disguise, stole the keys to the treasury and made off with the magic treasure chest.

Years passed, and Daventry is in ruins, and the king old and weak. He summons his most trusted knight Graham, and bestows upon him a quest to recover the three magic items. If Graham succeeds, the rule of the kingdom will be his.

You will have to lead Graham through the perilous lands of Daventry, and find a way to recover the magic items that are guarded by terrible enemies. There are a ton of ways for you to die, and one that leads you to lose an item, so remember to save your game often!

King's Quest 1 was the first graphical adventure. The original version of it was coded by Sierra for IBM in 1984. It used a beta version of the AGI engine that would later drive all major Sierra titles, and was a break from the normal text-adventures that featured some mostly static graphics. The EGA version was released in 1986.

Note that the GOG purchase link will get you King's Quest 1, 2 and 3 ((at $9.99 when not discounted). There's two more bundles, one with 4, 5, and 6 at the same price, and finally one with 7 and 8 at the same price)., The Steam link will get you King's Quest 1-7 for $19.99.
