Joan of Arc is considered a heroin of France for her role during the Lancastrian phase of the Hundred Years' War. It is believed that Joan had a vision of Saint Michael for the first time at the age of 13, and continued to have visions throughout her life. In her visions, Joan said that the archangel and the Saints instructed her to support Charles VII and recover France from English domination late in the Hundred Years' War. In 1429, she gained her prominence after the siege of Orleans was lifted under her support. After the event, Joan and the French army had several swift victories that led to Charles VII's consecration at Reims. Yet on 23 May 1430, she was captured at Compiègne by the Burgundian faction, and later handed over to the English and was burned at the stake on 30 May 1431, dying at about 19 years of age. In 1456, an inquisitorial court authorized by Pope Callixtus III examined the trial, debunked the charges against her, pronounced her innocence. Later in 1920, Joan of Arc was canonized.
